I have an insane amount of love for Ryan Murphy’s shows. But especially the ones like these (see: Nip/Tuck and the unaired pilot of Pretty/Handsome). Also, there’s much love calling out to horror movies. Growing up, I didn’t watch many of them but I find them utterly fascinating. I like being uncomfortable and on the edge of my seat in anticipation.
In American Horror Story, I find the characters both undesirable and appealing at once. I adore that mix and I think it’s glorious when it’s on my screen. My personal opinion? These are fairly realistic characters put in rather unrealistic situations (aka the horror of the episode, not their personal stories).
You’ve probably seen people and their love for the character of Tate. I admit, that’s who I love too. He and Violet (the teenagers of the show) are incredibly emotionally compelling. More so than anyone else on the show to me.
The set and camera work is visually stunning and thought out. It really portrays the utter creepiness aspect well. The acting is pretty damn incredible. The one who consistently steals the show with her mad skills is Jessica Lange. The storylines leave you yearning for more as they tend to end on some sort of cliffhanger or shocking reveal.
Whether or not you want to get into it, I suppose, really depends on your taste. It’s a dark, disturbing show. I would watch the first episode since it really sets the mood and, if you like that, move on to the episodes after. There are only eight episodes out currently.
